GP reports for under-40s abolished for life insurance - News 2009

People planning to take out life insurance and critical illness cover are set to benefit from an improved underwriting criteria designed to make it easier for people to get protection.

Legal & General has announced the changes in the application process, which will exempt under 40s from having to provide GP reports unless taking out cover worth more than £1 million.

According to Russ Whitworth, the organisation's underwriting and claims director for protection, the development will give advisers more control and make it possible for people to start their life insurance policies faster.

We're always looking to update and improve our underwriting philosophy and we felt that there was scope to speed up the process and make it easier for people to take out cover, he explained.

Therefore, for people under 50, GP reports are no longer the first piece of medical evidence that we will look for, instead focusing on nurse screening examinations, which take up less time.

He went on to state that there are certain scenarios where no medical evidence whatsoever will be required but added that the limits will vary with age.

The company has also introduced online-based underwriting systems.
