Accident, illness and unemployment cover for industrial workers
Industrial workers operating near dangerous machinery may want to consider taking out accident, illness and unemployment cover following an incident in which a worker was trapped in machinery and cracked his ribs.
The accident involving Chester-based industrial employee Stephen Shore has resulted in the prosecution of his employer Calder Industrial Materials by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
According to HSE inspector Bruce Jones, Mr Shore sustained injuries because guards and gates that would have prevented access to dangerous machinery were not installed until after the incident.
He said: "Fixed guards and a padlocked gate should have prevented Mr Shore from entering the machine and accessing the underside of a tipping table, which is used to tip debris onto a conveyor belt."
The worker was attempting to clear debris from a conveyor belt last year when he became trapped and sustained crush injuries that included cracked ribs and severe bruising, the HSE said.
It was not revealed how long he took to get well but such incidents highlight the importance of having accident, illness and unemployment cover, which offers a source of income during the recovery period.
