Quitting smoking good for health and life assurance premiums
A new report on smoking, which has been known to increase people's life assurance premiums in addition to ruining their health, has been published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The ONS data show that there is widespread support for the smoking ban in indoor places, with 93 per cent of those polled supporting prevention of smoking in restaurants, although the number fell to 75 per cent in pubs.
Nearly half (44 per cent) of people who smoke agree that the habit is not only costly but also detrimental to their health and the main cause of premature death, the report shows.
Commenting on the report, Betty McBride of the British Heart Foundation said that smoking "is one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease and ill health, a fact even smokers themselves recognise".
Smokers can lower the amount of money they pay towards their life assurance and critical illness premiums by quitting the habit, consumer website moneysupermarket.com recently stated.
According to the website, a 30-year-old male smoker with a critical illness cover of £100,000 would end up forking out £5,670 more than a non-smoker over the full term of a 25-year-long policy.
